Though a referral is not needed to see one of our physicians, many insurance providers do require one. This is to ensure that the specialist you are seeing is appropriate for your specific medical needs and condition. For Medicare holders, please note that Medicare pays higher rebates for specialist services if you have been referred. We recommend checking with your insurance provider prior to your first visit.
We alway recommend our patients see their family doctor before seeking specialist care. He or she will be able to better discuss your condition with you and advise on whether any specialist care is appropriate. If it is determined you need to seek specialist care, your doctor will be able to provide relevant information about your health. It also creates open lines of communication between our office and your family physician to help better care for you during and after your specialist treatment.
On your initial visit, your physician will discuss your symptoms and medical concerns and explain the next steps and specific test(s) or procedure(s) that will help you achieve optimal health. In most cases, you will receive a physical examination and be asked a series of questions. After your examination, you and your doctor will determine the next steps in your treatment plan.
Otolaryngology (pronounced oh/toe/lair/in/goll/oh/jee) is known as the oldest medical specialty in the United States. Otolaryngologists are specially trained physicians in both the medical and surgical management and treatment of patients with diseases and/or disorders of the ear, nose, throat (ENT), and related structures of the head and neck. More commonly, Otolaryngologists are referred to as ENT physicians. To learn more about ENT specialists, visit the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery.
Otolaryngologists (ENTs) are certified to begin practicing after completing up to 15 years of college and postgraduate training and having passed the American Board of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery examination. After completing medical school, graduates spend 3-5 years as an ENT resident, which is a program that includes a year of surgical training. Physicians are then required to renew their license every 7-10 years.

Different levels of hearing loss require different types of treatment. If you suspect you may be experiencing hearing loss, you should schedule an appointment with Midwest ENT / Midwest Hearing Center. Our doctors of audiology will diagnose your level of hearing loss with a hearing test to identify the quietest sounds you can hear, measured in decibels. Your hearing test will help us determine your level of hearing loss, and our team will create a treatment plan.
Sudden hearing loss, particularly in one ear, can be a sign of a more serious condition. If you experience sudden hearing loss, contact your doctor immediately.
